Bystander Intervention Training Training Course

Bystander Intervention Training

This Bystander Intervention Training Course equips delegates with the knowledge, confidence and practical tools to intervene safely when witnessing harassment, discrimination or uncomfortable behaviour in the workplace. The session explores the Bystander Effect, subtle acts of bias, safe intervention strategies and how active bystanders contribute to a positive, respectful working environment.

Bystander intervention is one of the most effective ways to prevent harassment and discrimination in the workplace. When employees understand how to recognise inappropriate behaviour and feel confident to act, they can disrupt harmful situations before they escalate. This course helps delegates understand why people hesitate to intervene, how group dynamics influence behaviour and how to choose the safest and most effective response.

The training is practical, accessible and relevant to all workplace environments. Delegates explore real examples of harassment, subtle discrimination and microbehaviours, learning how active bystanders can protect targets, discourage harmful behaviour and contribute to a healthier organisational culture.

Reflective Practice

Delegates are encouraged to reflect on their own responses to uncomfortable situations, exploring how fear, uncertainty or group pressure can influence decision‑making. This reflective space helps participants recognise personal barriers to intervention, understand the impact of silence and develop confidence in choosing safe, appropriate actions. The aim is to empower individuals to move from passive observation to active support.

Real‑World Scenarios

These scenarios help delegates explore how bystanders can intervene safely and effectively when witnessing harassment, discrimination or uncomfortable behaviour.

Scenario 1: Subtle Harassment

A colleague repeatedly makes “jokes” about another employee’s accent. The target looks uncomfortable but laughs it off.

  • Recognising subtle acts of bias
  • Using the Distract or Delegate strategy
Scenario 2: Escalating Behaviour

During a busy shift, an employee is spoken to aggressively by a supervisor in front of others. The team feels uneasy but no one intervenes.

  • Choosing the safest intervention method
  • Understanding when to confront or report
Scenario 3: Group Bystander Effect

A discriminatory comment is made in a team meeting. Everyone notices, but each person assumes someone else will speak up.

  • Understanding the Bystander Effect
  • Building confidence to act even in groups
